type='text'>Okay, so we're wimps but we still had fun

At 5:30, Saturday afternoon, the wind picked up. Our faces burned as we laid the wood for the bonfire. At 6:00 we checked the forecast which read that temperatures would get to -12 degrees with the windchill factor. So we canceled the fire, moved everything into Mike's Music exchange and expected no-one to show. Who goes out on nights like this?

Turns out, there are a lot of courageous people in Eldorado. About 30 people came, all were disappointed that there wouldn't be a fire, and most stayed for hot cider and live music at Mike's. We left just before 10 pm. Several people stayed until 2 am. Wow!

Above is a photo of John and Karen Cole (Publishers of Santa Fe Oneheart Magazine) joining the jam session.

Soooooo..... We will start having regular bonfires. We will make them earlier in the evening and we will light them (unless it is pouring rain!)

In the meantime, a couple of things to tell you about:

1. Home Planet Cafe is now open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (Great food, espresso and cappucino, good prices!)

2. Sound Check at Mike's Music Exchange this Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening from 7pm - 9pm. Sound Check will feature local musicians in 30 - 60 minute sessions. Feel free to stop by and listen. No cover for these events.

3. We are looking for people who want to teach after school and/or early childhood classes at La Tienda. We have a great space that we are setting up for this purpose. Eldorado needs more things for kids to do so if you, or someone you know, wants to offer art classes, music classes, movement classes, etc, we would love to hear from you.

var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? After spending most of the holiday indoors with lots of new electronic toys, we'll be looking forward to some fresh air and an opportunity to get out of the house. Hope you can join us.

Don't forget those in need. Beyond Borders Books is the drop off location for Esperanza Shelter and Beinvenidos.

Thanks again for making the grand opening such an incredible event. They will be at Home Planet Cafe from 1:00 to 2:00 instead of 2:00 to 3:00.

Open Hands will have a truck on site for donations. If you are wanting to clear your garage for a really good cause, please bring your items to La Tienda on Saturday.

Esperanza Shelter will be at the center from 10:00 to 5:00 (maybe longer but they're not sure yet). They have a very real need for items off of their wish list and if you can help, it would mean the world to some folks who have had a pretty rough time of it. Click here for the Esperanza wish list.

We are delighted and very grateful that the Gaming Lounge (on St. Michaels Drive behind Carl's Junior) has agreed to sponsor the teen gaming from 6:00 to 8:00. If you have teens, let them know about this place. It's pretty incredible and very affordable.

Finally, here are brief bios of the poets who will be presenting a round robbin reading at Beyond Borders Books from 4:00 - 5:00.

Lindsay Ahl is the author of the novel Desire, published by Coffee House Press, which was said by Booklist to be "nothing less than a tour de force." She edits the Bliss Lit section of Bliss Magazine and has published interviews with such poets as W.S. Merwin, Jim Harrison, A. Having volunteered at the Eldorado Farmers Market for 2 years, we met very friendly people. It was an easy decision for us to open our restaurant at La Tienda and be a part of the community.

(Q) How do anticipate interacting with the community?
La Plancha de Eldorado is going to be a family friendly restaurant were people can sit down and enjoy our selection of traditional foods from Latin America. The full menu will be available for to go orders and catered events.

(Q) Is La Tienda's vision of community service important to you and why? Yes, community is important to us as a family and as business owners. We have seen how the owners of La Tienda have been helping out and are always there to give support to people opening businesses at La Tienda.

(Q) What makes your business unique?
La Plancha de Eldorado will continue to serve the Eldorado community with our family friendly service and traditional Latin foods that we have been become known for at the Eldorado Farmers Market. We will continue to bring the flavors of Latin foods to Eldorado using local New Mexican farm products as they are available. We support our local farmers.
Q) How long have you lived in Eldorado or what is your connection to the Eldorado community?
We do not live in Eldorado but we have been helping LearningMind.org at the Eldorado Farmers Market for two seasons. We cooked and sold traditional foods from El Salvador as a fund raiser for Learning Mind. The Farmers Market gave us the opportunity to meet many people and teach them about our traditional foods. This was a great experience for us.

(Q) Any other thoughts or comments?
We want to thank all the people who are helping build a better community for Eldorado and the people who are helping us with La Plancha de Eldorado.... we hope to see you there . We plan to open February 2010.
Mucho Gracias

Business Profile # 7 -- Beyond Borders Books

Business: Beyond Borders Books a non profit used bookstore and art space
Location: Building A
Owners: operated by LearningMind.org and staffed by volunteers

Q) Tell me about your business (experience, dream, vision, etc.)?
(A) Learning Mind, a locally based not-for-profit organization is dedicated to promoting education to children and young adults who otherwise would not have the opportunity. In addition to education programs, Learning Mind works towards improving social and economic conditions to rural areas via micro loans, assistance in health care treatments and expenses.
Self funded from 1999-2007, Learning Mind gained NM non profit status in 2007. All projects are funded by the sale of used books, cash donations and fund raising events. Many in our community will recognize us from our non profit table at the Eldorado Farmers Market on Fridays. As a fund raiser at the Eldorado Farmers Market, Learning Mind, with the help of Lidia and her children Juan and Tatiana would sell traditional foods from the countries where we have on going projects. Currently we are providing educational assistance to children in Santa Fe, India, El Salvador and Morocco.
Now, with this bookstore it is our hope that we will receive regular book and CD donations to not only fund Learning Mind projects but offer assistance to other non profits that share our vision and commitment to help others.

(Q) Why did you choose to open your business in Eldorado?
(A)The owners of La Tienda wanted a used book store to serve the community. Learning Mind has books and needed a location to receive donations and to sell books. Learning Mind is based in Eldorado. And there you have it!

(Q) How do anticipate interacting with the community?
(A)Beyond Borders Books is operated by LearningMInd.org and will be staffed by volunteers. We have and will continue to ask the Eldorado community to support our efforts and donate their quality used books and CD's. The book store will also be a space where writers and artists can show or perform their art. We have had a wonderful response from people offering to help sort and shelf books in addition to volunteering their time to staff the store once it opens. Local artist Howard Riley and Artist Kathamann from Santa Fe will be the first to show their art in Beyond Borders Books. Sui Ki Lee was the first to perform in the space with his incredible “orchestra” of singing bowls. His return performance is not to be missed on opening day Dec 12 from 2-4 PM

(Q) Is La Tienda's vision of community service important to you and why?
(A)Yes........because this is how it should be! We're all out here together! Be positive and participate!

(Q) What makes your business unique?
(A) As a not-for-profit used book store we will rely 100% on donations and volunteers to staff the store. We will have scheduled “events of interest” to make Beyond Borders Books a cool place to be! And..... Beyond Borders Books will be a “drop off” point of presence for other non profits such as Bienvenidos Outreach of Santa Fe.

Q) How long have you lived in Eldorado or what is your connection to the Eldorado community?
(A)Learning Mind has been located in Eldorado since 2001. We've had a strong public presence with our non profit table at the Eldorado Farmers Market and at the 2009 Lamy Solar Fest.

Days away and final schedule of events

La Tienda at Eldorado will open for business this Saturday!!! I have been in business in Santa Fe for over 18 years. Specializing in sales and repair of PC’s, we offer both new and used equipment at affordable prices.

My model is simple. Supply better, more durable equipment then you find at the big box stores and combine that with the best service. I have great employees and great customers. We take care of our customers and they take care of us. It is simple but it works. I am proud that my business has won “Best of Santa Fe” for several years in a row.

(Q) Why did you choose to open a business in Eldorado
(A)Eldorado is a great community full of wonderful people. It is under served in so many areas and my business will provide one of those needed services and create jobs right here. Many people in Eldorado drive their computers to my shop in Santa Fe. Having a local tech shop is what I love to do.

I am “La Tienda”, the shop. Just like all the other great shops opening up here. No national franchises, no huge businesses, just local people from the community, serving the community.

(Q) How do anticipate interacting with the community?
(A) Talk and help people. That’s what I do. As a business Eldorado Computer Works will provide sales of new and used computers, also walk in and on site repair services.

Being a part of the community is why I am opening this business. I have several community outreach programs including 100% recycling for old computers and monitors, classes, and non-profit support. In addition, Eldorado Computer Works is part of the effort to provide free wireless service throughout La Tienda.

(Q) Is La Tienda's vision of community service important to you and why?
(A) Absolutely. As one of the owners of La Tienda, I helped create the vision. Josh, Destiny, and I love community, love being connected to community. Buying the center and creating something so new and fresh is a dream come true. If this was just a strip mall I would have no interest in owning it or starting a new business in it.

La Tienda has not even opened and I have already met so many wonderful new people and connected back with people from my past. The constant encouragement I have been getting from people in the community tells me we are doing something right here, something important.

(Q) What makes your business unique?
(A)I care. I am not a big box store. I provide the absolute best service and products I can and the community sustains me. I have always felt blessed over the years to have the support of the community and to be able to service the community.

(Q). How long have you lived in Eldorado, or what is your connection to the Eldorado community?
(A)Though I currently live in Sunlit Hills, I lived in Eldorado for about 15 years and still have family there. My kids have all gone to school in Eldorado. I have run the fun run, garage saled, eaten the ice cream, ridden the bike paths, hiked the trails, played at the parks, and swam in the pool. I love Eldorado.

Wow. Where to start.... Some days I feel like I'm spinning so fast I can't see straight. We're in the final throws and there is still so much to do. Still, every minute there is progress. Gene has his painting almost done in his new sandwich shop. The duct work for 4 Sisters Consignment gallery is almost done. La Plancha is ordering equipment and knocking down unnecessary walls. The stage, sound proofing and part of the recording booth are under construction at Mike's Music Exchange. Home Planet is ordering wines. The painting is finished (wait until you see it, its gorgeous) and they expect to be finished with the remodel sometime next week. The wall dividing The Art Garden and Eldorado Computer Works is just about done. Beyond Borders Books is taking daily donations, the shelves are in, and the painting starts tomorrow. Everywhere is debris, dust, stacked furniture and I have to keep reminding myself that order comes from chaos.

We finally have permission to reveal that Santa Fe Brewing Company will be opening a tap house. The official name is Santa Fe Brewing Company Tap House. Okay, so I gave it away in the preceding sentence, but we are still thrilled to be able to share this news with you.

The Grand Opening schedule of events is filling out and we hope you keep checking our event page on the web site so you can plan your day accordingly. It seems that more gets added every day.

We'll keep you posted as we move along. More new business profiles will be coming soon. It supported me through college, raising a family of four and eventually enabled me to open my first restaurant in Eldorado. Food has always been an inspiration, a comforter, an educator and a great means by which I met, interacted and developed great, long lasting relationships and acquaintances with a variety of people with different and similar cultures and ideas. One of my dreams has been accomplished by opening my first restaurant. There are still many more floating around but what is really exciting is my concept that the strength of vision creates and supports the births of dreams which then allows us to help, support, and encourage our brothers and sisters whom we refer to as community.

(Q) Why did you choose to open your business in Eldorado?

(A) I have had a business in Eldorado for 1 1/2 years and have truly developed this love and joy for the people.I have not always felt this secure--after I accepted the business offer in Eldorado I immediately had questions of "what am I doing?"-It's sooo far out there, will there be enough support?.Am I crazy? The result is that Eldorado chose me and I have only found encouragement, support, eagerness and love from such a diverse and willing community.

(Q) How do anticipate interacting with the community?

(A) I will and have supported the community by sponsoring events, donating cash and gift certificates, and supporting the school by purchasing ads through their programs. Advertising in the Eldorado Studio Tour pamphlets and being involved with community events. With the new business in La Tienda, I will continue this support with a bit more intensity and will become involved in more events and programs as they develop and require more attention.

(Q) Is La Tienda's vision of community service important to you and why?

(A) La Tienda's vision for the community is the best fertilizer for children, teenagers, and adults alike. La Tienda will be developing, strengthening, and supporting the infra-structure of Eldorado and the surrounding communities which creates the "full circle cycle." We support the community and the community supports La Tienda. We assist the community and in turn we will get assisted. We support the leaders and in turn we will become leaders. It's a beautiful win win situation.

(Q) What makes your business unique?

(A) The uniqueness of the sandwich shop will be it's affordability, flavors, and a BIG-O-SMILE !!My hope is to create a fun, social, comfortable place to eat and hang out or you can just eat it and beat it !

(Q) How long have you lived in Eldorado or what is your connection to the Eldorado community?

(A) I do not live in Eldorado and truly enjoy the drive in from Santa Fe but that is not to say that if the opportunity presents itself, I wouldn't refuse. Now that I think about it, I think that I can possibly say that I live in Eldorado due to the fact the I spend 12 to 16 hours here a day!

(Q) Any other thoughts or comments?

(A) THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Steve, Destiny, Josh and all the people and circumstance along the way that have brought the three of you to Eldorado and into my life.My soul and spirit have risen and my stomach is smiling!?!?!?

La Tienda News -- Business Profile #4

Business: Home Planet Cafe
Location: Buiding AA
Owners: Steve and Vicki

(Q) Tell me about your business (experience, dream, vision, etc.)?

(A) Home Planet Café is a casual, earth-friendly restaurant --"comfort food with a global spin”. It will be a robust operation serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a soon-to-be-legendary Sunday brunch. The food will be all about comfort, abundance & that sense of satisfaction that comes from eating a meal prepared with love. Our menus will lean toward American country cooking, but also offer dishes from other parts of the world that are considered 'home' cooking in that culture--so there might be a Moroccan Stew right next to the Green Chile Stew. Our goal is to serve comfort food in its many forms, always giving that concept a slight spin while celebrating nature's bounty with wholesome, fresh food--using local sources as much as possible.

(Q) Why did you choose to open a business in Eldorado?

(A) We have lived in Eldorado for 5 years and believe that Eldorado needs more dining choices. We are looking forward to running into our friends and neighbors. The physical plant, layout and location of the restaurant space are all excellent and we are excited to be able to offer the Eldorado community a new, quality choice for great food.

(Q) How do you anticipate interacting with the community?

(A) Food, drink and a comfortable place to meet and interact are cornerstones of any community and we provide those things as our stock in trade. We are also hiring, as much as possible, from within Eldorado. The chef will be taking on three formal apprentices chosen from among teenagers living in the immediate community, and we have planned cooking classes and wine tastings for the New Year. We welcome community input and will accommodate needs and desires to the best of our ability.

(Q) Is La Tienda's vision of community service important to you and why?

(A) Part of my incentive to get back into the restaurant business was meeting La Tienda’s new owners and discovering that we had a similar vision for Eldorado and La Tienda. We had identified similar community needs to be met, and we shared the understanding that committing to the community is risky, but also hugely rewarding.

(Q) What makes your business unique?

(A) Home Planet Café is the culmination of Steve Cooper’s 33 year long career as a chef and restaurateur, and of Vicki Teague-Cooper’s career as an artist, designer and former pastry chef. In this operation we will use the recipes, techniques, psychological resilience and secrets of management that we have painfully discovered over the years; we will use all our savvy and moxie to deliver an experience that will not only be truly unique, but will also be tasty and lovely to behold.

La Tienda News Business Profile #3

Mike's Music Exchange

Location: Building AA
Owner: Mike

(Q) Tell me about your business (experience, dream, vision, etc.)?

(A) Mike's Music Exchange has the mission of connecting local artists to the community, and the community to local artists. Eldorado is teeming with great talent, but does not have a well designed place where people can connect through performances and events to share that talent. This is the purpose for the exchange. Mike's Music Exchange combines a performance space, a cost effective recording studio, a musical instrument store, and a one-on-one teacher student instructional space to attempt to enhance and enrich musical connections within the community.

(Q) Why did you choose to open a business in Eldorado?

(A) Aside from Eldorado being my home and place of work for the last 8 years, it also allows me to direct my energies toward something that is good for our community, and something I believe the community really needs. When I discovered La Tienda's community based business vision, I knew the time, the place, and the vision was right for starting this kind of business.

(Q) How do you anticipate interacting with the community?

(A) Community involvement is critical to the success of the exchange. Aside from simply renting out a performance space and providing a music store and recording studio, the exchange will promote local musicians and their music through a variety of means. For example, the exchange will promote lists of bands and musicians for hire, but it will also allow musicians that would otherwise not get a chance to interact with each other to have a place to meet, play, and share ideas. It is my hope that home grown musicians will be able to record and promote their music right here in the community from which it is born. In addition, the venue provides for community involvement through events that would otherwise not have a comfortable venue, such as community theatre productions, art showings, and the like.

(Q) Is La Tienda's vision of community service important to you and why?

(A) Simply stated, La Tienda's vision will transform an otherwise standard commercial office complex into a gathering place for the community; a place where people will want to be. Eldorado stands alone not only geographically but also culturally from Santa Fe, and La Tienda will give the community something it really needs - community interaction.

(Q) What makes your business unique?

(A) Mike's Music Exchange is a synergy of multiple businesses that work together. Although you can find a performance space, an instrument store, a recording studio, and instructional space in town, you will not find them near each other, and they wont be able to provide these services in conjunction with each other. By placing all these services in one convenient location musicians and music lovers will have a home for their music and a musical outlet in which to express it. And even better, its just right down the street from where we live.

(Q) How long have you lived in Eldorado or what is your connection to the Eldorado Community?

(A) My wife Lisa and myself (both born and raised in Iowa) arrived in Eldorado in 2001 from Dallas, Texas with our then 2 year old daughter Jessica after searching for years to find a way to live and work here; we, like many others, found the natural wonders and great climate irresistible. Two years later, our New Mexico born son Ben arrived. We live just two blocks from the Eldorado Community School where we are active in helping out the school through various clubs and organizations. Since arriving here we've found many great friends and a connection to the community that makes us proud to call Eldorado our home.

(Q) Any other thoughts, comments?

(A) I would like to personally congratulate and thank the owners and visionaries at La Tienda for giving Eldorado a unique gift; in time our community will come to appreciate how a dead office complex can be transformed into a living community center through heartfelt effort and a driving commitment to community involvement.

Business Profile # 2: The Art Garden

Yesterday, we introduced you to SpinDoc and its new owners, Kirk and Chandler. Today, we are introducing The Art Garden. Here are the Q & A's:

Business Name: The Art Garden
Location: Building B
Owners: Jessica and Mark

Q) Tell me about your business (experience, past businesses, dream, > vision, etc.)

A) Mark and I have many years of experience in the gallery business, both in Santa Fe and previously in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although both places offered fun and adventure, we enjoyed the California location more because our gallery was located in a small, somewhat isolated village on the coast just below San Francisco (pop. 2500), and we were very much a part of that community. Although it drew tourists because it was right on the coast highway, the gallery was primarily a place where local residents could hang out, and shop for handmade, fine crafts and artwork. We had soft music, fountains, good coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, and soon became the favorite place to stop and shop for the locals. When we moved to Santa Fe (to exchange our constant fog for lots of sunshine), we found that running galleries for tourists lacked that special feeling of getting to know your customers, so we took a hiatus from the gallery business.

(Q) Why did you choose to open a business in Eldorado?

(A) When we heard that La Tienda was in the hands of some lively and talented people with such a strong sense of community, it re-awakened our desire to be a conduit for creativity in a small community context.

(Q) How do you anticipate interacting with the community?

(A) We want The Art Garden to be the place you go when you need a special, meaningful, handmade gift for any occasion, when you just need to spend a little soothing, relaxing time being inspired in our indoor "garden" space - while sipping a mug of tea or coffee maybe, or when you feel like exploring your own creativity by sitting and making some greeting cards, or taking a mini workshop.

(Q) Is La Tienda's vision of community service important to you and why?

(A) Yes, because in this high-tech world, we need community, and community is all about the balance of giving and receiving. Our special soft spot is for animals, and we have several ideas of how we might benefit local sanctuaries, shelters, and rescue organizations through special projects and products, and events.

(Q) What makes your business unique?

(A) Me. I make our business unique. Creating the new and different has been a life-long passion. Nothing interests me more than new ideas.I am an artist myself - working in many media. My galleries and my websites (Cre8it.com and WisdomWoman.com) are artworks to me, and I make them into the most unusual, creative spaces they can possibly be - and then change things around a lot to keep them fresh and interesting. You can be sure that even if you visit The Art Garden every week, there will be new and interesting things to see and do.

(Q) How long have you lived in Eldorado or what is your connection to the Eldorado Community?

(A) We have lived in and loved Eldorado since 1996.

(Q) Any other thoughts and comments?

(A) We are very excited about the company in which we find ourselves as a part of the La Tienda project. The energy is amazing and stimulating. Our community *needs* this and will be such a better place because of it.

Introducing the La Tienda Businesses

There are now less than 6 weeks before our grand opening celebration on December 12. While we will continue to keep you posted on new developments, we want to also take a little time to introduce our new businesses to you. With that in mind, we asked each business owner to answer 6 questions that will help you to get a sense of who they are, why they are here, and what they are going to offer our community. Having said that, let me introduce the first new business:

Business Profile

SpinDoc

Location: Building B

Owners, Kirk and Chandler
(Q) Tell me about your business (experience, past businesses, dream, vision, etc.)

(A) Kirk and I have both formed our own start-up ventures in the past. We have both been involved in fitness for much of our lives. From the age of 4 to 20, I pursued a professional ballet career, swam competitively, and have pursued other forms of dance including modern, jazz, salsa and bellydance. Several years ago I started racing in sprint-distance triathlon and cross training in various sports, including lifting. Kirk has raced triathlon for many years, and has completed four Ironman triathlons among a myriad of other races. His world has become increasingly velocentric, and he currently participates in various endurance races and mountain bike races.

With fitness being such an integral part of our lives, it is a very natural transition for us to move into fitness as a business. We are offering spin, but it will be spin that is geared towards outdoor cycling, not merely fitness. As such, we will offer spin classes that are cycling-specific, bike repair services, cycling tour guide services, and Kirk is currently mentoring a Monte del Sol student in bike repair and cycling skills, a concept that may be developed further in the future.

(Q) Why did you choose to open a business in Eldorado?

(A) As residents of Eldorado, and with the lack of a spin facility here, it made more sense than contemplating opening in town.

(Q)How do you anticipate interacting with the community?

(A) Fitness is an integral part of our lives. We plan to provide, in addition to intermediate and various advanced level classes, classes for teens aged 12-16 and adult beginners in order to make this form of fitness accessible to a broader clientele. We plan on offering free spin to the Eldorado Volunteer Fire Department in acknowledgement of their services to our community. At the Farmer's Market, we'll set up a "while you wait" bike repair service. We'll continue to promote cycling as a form of transportation as the business develops. One idea it to offer a discount to those who ride to the spin studio. What a great warm-up for class!

(Q) Is La Tienda's vision of community service important to you and why?

(A) It is fabulous that more family- and kid-related businesses will be available locally. It is particularly important to us to provide healthy environments for kids since Eldorado is home to so many families. With this in mind, we added the concept of "kid spin," a 30- minute spin class specifically geared to kids in the 12-16 year range (kids 17 and older are invited to participate in the regular spin classes).

(Q) What makes your business unique?

(A) Not only will SpinDoc be the only spin studio on the 285 corridor, the business will provide personal training, bike repair, cycle tour guide services, and brings a complimentary fitness outlet to the existing Eldorado Gym and the Pilate's studio. A variety of classes will be offered by certified instructors, including a "kid" spinning class, beginners through advanced classes, and bicycle-specific classes that focus on climbing, speed, and core strength.

(Q) How long have you lived in Eldorado or what is your connection to the Eldorado Community?

(A) Kirk and I have both lived on and off in Eldorado since 1992 and 2000 respectively.

Happenings

La Tienda is under construction!!! We can't believe it. After the last few months of permits and planning, our new businesses are working on the physical construction of their spaces. Its wonderful to see the buzz and activity.

In addition to all the other businesses we have been telling you about, we are thrilled to share the two newest additions to the La Tienda mix.

Learning Mind Books will open as part of our Grand Opening on December 12. This bookstore is so cool. Learning Mind will be a used bookstore that is operated by and provides support to local non profit organizations. Some of you already know Learning Mind through their table at the Eldorado Farmer's Market and through their semi-annual 25 cent book sale.

On that note, don't miss their huge book sale at La Tienda, in Suite 101, this coming Friday, October 30 from 3:00 to 6:00 and Saturday, October 31 from 8:00 to 1:00. They have more than 5,000 books and the selection is terrific (I've already been scoping it out).

The second new business we are ready to announce is the Latin Grill. Tacos, burritos, poblanos, and more will be on the menu.

Here is a list of all our new businesses to date:

Home Planet Cafe

Mike's Music Exchange

Tap Room (still working on the name)

Latin Grill

Learning Mind Books

4 Sisters Consignment Gallery

The Art Garden

The Gym at Eldorado

The Spin Doctor

Eldorado Computerworks

Suite 101

Mark your calendars for our grand opening on December 12th. We should have our schedule of events complete by next week and up on the web site at http://www.latiendaeldorado.com.

In addition to the non profits we are currently sponsoring, we are happy to welcome Feline and Friends cat adoptions to our mix.

We'll keep you posted on developments. Also, please keep sending in your ideas and suggestions. They have been invaluable to us and to the businesses who will be part of La Tienda.

OMG!!!

Wow it has been busy at La Tienda! In brief:

La Tienda has a new restaurant. The working name is "Home Planet" and it will feature comfort food from around the world. Focused on affordability, family friendly, quality food cooked from scratch, this restaurant will be a wonderful new venue for the Eldorado community.

In the last newsletter, we talked about a performance space. As it turns out someone else had the same idea. A plan is in progress, and as the business owner says, "Onward and upward. " This performance space will have a stage, a recording booth, and a musical instrument store. Can you believe it! Eldorado will have regular live music and a full fledged performance venue.

"The Art Garden" will be opening a unique gift gallery with a twist. One of a kind works, handcrafted paper, jewelry, even classes for the artist in each of us will be some of the features of this new store.

We do want to tell you about the Subway. As many of you know, the restaurant is closed. If you go by, you will see a sign on the door that says, "Landlord forced closure." This is not true. The Subway owner canceled their food order last week and they ran out of food. While it is true that this particular franchise owner was given 30 days notice to vacate on October 31st, they made the decision to close the store early. The notice to vacate was not related to the Subway itself, but to a legal dispute with the owner. We are working to provide an alternative food vendor that provides similar services. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

As it stands now, 10 out of 17 spaces have been leased or are in pre-lease agreements.

Farmers Market is now at La Tienda. This week we had perfect weather and wonderful vendors. They will keep the market open as long as the weather holds. When it gets cold, they will do a monthly indoor market at the center.

La Tienda is proud to sponsor two additional non-profit groups. The Eldorado Children's Theatre will be practicing for their January performance and will be able, for the first time, to rehearse with all their props and stage sets. The 6th annual XX Art Exhibition, promoting creative spirit and artistic exploration, will open its month long exhibition in conjunction with our Grand Opening Event on December 12.

Finally, Eldorado youth needs your help. The next teen center meeting will be held at Suite 101 on Monday, October 19 from 7 - 8 pm. Bring your kids, your neighbors and your friends and help us get this important project off the ground.

50% leased and moving forward

Sorry its been a while since we've written. We had a wonderful vacation but got sick on our last day in Barcelona and have been down with the flu since. We are finally feeling better and have a lot to share with you about the progress at La Tienda.

The surveyors were out for the parking lot and sculpture garden. We hope to break ground this month so that the parking lot is finished by December in time for the Grand Opening celebration. Six new businesses will definitely be part of this event.

In addition, several new businesses are developing their plans for occupying spaces. We won't tell you what they are quite yet, but we are very, very excited about them.

We are getting closer to identifying the restaurant that will occupy the former Brumby's space. One of the most exciting things to come out of our discussions about the restaurant is the probability that we will split the Brumby's space. Two thirds of the space will become the restaurant/bar. The other third (formerly the main dining room, banquet room, and patio will become a rentable performance space for the community.

If you have a band, are part of a salsa club, are interested in community theater, or anything else that needs a large space with a stage and sound equipment, we would love to talk with you.

Destiny and I love to dance and we love live music. There is no venue for either in Eldorado. From what we have heard, many of you share our love for all kinds of music. We're still working out the details and are open to input, but this is what we have so far:

1. We are tentatively calling this performance space, "Off the Grid," but would love to have you help us name it. Please send us your ideas.
2. It is approximately 2,000 Square Feet.
3. We will put in a stage and some basic sound equipment.
4. The space will be rentable on a per day basis for $250
5. La Tienda will sponsor some events. Local bands, DJ's, theater groups, performance art groups, dance groups, etc. will be able to rent the space as needed.
6. We will put a calendar of events on our web site and help to get the word out to the community about events in the space.

We would love your feed back on this idea and will incorporate as much as we can into the plans.

That's about it for now. Remember to click on the Suite 101 link on the web site and check out the calendar of events in this space. The word is getting out and people are using the space for a variety of things. Hope Kiah's Web Tutorial was well attended. Edward Jones Financial Seminar is coming up this week. So is the 2nd meeting about a teen center in Eldorado. If you are at all interested in a teen center, please join us tomorrow night at 7:00.

Thanks for your continued interest and support,

Steve

Moving Along

Wow. time is flying. This week, we focused on getting the new parking lot (on the west side of La Tienda) going. The engineers have it now and we expect to have the final plans by the first of October. Getting the parking lot done moves us that much further toward our December grand opening and toward the ground breaking on the sculpture park.

We are delighted to be working with Don McAvinchey and a group of involved community members toward the creation of a teen center at La Tienda. If any of you have an interest in participating in this project, we are having our next meeting in Suite 101 on Tuesday, October 13 from 7-8:30 PM. Please join us if you can.

For those of you who own small businesses and would like to increase traffic to your website, Hope Kiah, author of the award winning "Keyword Tutorial" ebook, will be hosting a free workshop in Suite 101 on Saturday, October 3 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Call Hope at
466-4447 to register, or for more information. Space is limited, so sign up early.

Destiny and I are off tomorrow night for a much needed and long overdue vacation. If you have questions or comments while we are gone (through September 23) please call Josh Rigsby, our partner, at 577-1970.

We will publish our next newsletter when we return.

Things are hopping

Walk through and around La Tienda and you will see "Coming Soon" banners in lots of windows. Last week, I told you about the brew pub, the computer store, the consignment gallery, the spin bike classes and Suite 101.

This week, we are thrilled to add an optical shop to the growing list of businesses and services at La Tienda. Soon, you will be able to have your eye wear prescriptions filled in Eldorado.

We are in discussion with people about some exciting new ventures. One of these is the creation of a teen center in the spaces at the rear of Building B. The need for a teen space is so great, that La Tienda is committed to helping make it happen. If you are interested in helping with this project in any way, please let us know as soon as possible.

We are also in discussion with someone about a family bike store at La Tienda. This person has a successful bike business in Santa Fe. He is an Eldorado resident, with two children, who recognizes this need in our community. Imagine not having to drive all the way to town every time your child runs over a goathead!

Finally, watch for the Suite 101 Calendar on the web site. Here's a list of some upcoming events at Suite 101:

The Eldorado Arts Association meeting will be held at Suite 101 on September 24.

Free web tutorial hosted by Hope Kiah, of Santa Fe Web Design, on October 3rd from 10 - 12. Call Hope at 466-4447 for more information.

Edward Jones Financial Seminar will take place on October 7 from 11:30 to 1:30. For more information, visit Fred in the Agora shopping center.

Please take the time to give us your comments and feedback using the community input button on the web site. We are finding them invaluable. Thanks,

Steve

Welcome to La Tienda

Welcome to La Tienda at Eldorado. Josh and I are thrilled by the community feedback we are receiving and hope that you will continue to give us your thoughts and suggestions.

We wanted to bring you up to speed on what’s happening at the center and ensure that you are kept up to date on new developments. Our weekly newsletter will help you stay informed. Here is what is happening so far:

We are in the process of finishing the parking around the building. The parking addition will be completed by the end of November.

We do not plan on constructing any new buildings in the foreseeable future. Instead, we will be constructing a sculpture park on almost an acre of land on the east side of the center. This park, scheduled to be completed by July, 2010, will be free and open to the public. It will feature 20 sculpture pads for large and monumental works of art. We will be promoting both local and national artists while we create a community green space we hope you will enjoy. The sculpture pads will be placed along meandering paths through 4 different landscape designs. We are looking for two more members for our steering committee. If you are interested in helping us to build this park, please contact Destiny at (505) 930-4821.

We are working with several businesses to create the kind of center we envision. Its hard not to give you the names of the businesses that are coming in, but for legal reasons, we have to wait until the permitting process is complete. Our grand opening is slated for December.

Without naming names, here are some of the kinds of businesses that will participate in the December opening:

A tap room by an established local brewery
A spin cycle business
An eclectic gift/gallery/consignment shop
Suite 101 (we can name this name)
A computer sales and repair shop

Suite 101 is a beautiful, 720 square foot space available for hourly rental. Wood floors, mirrored wall, and great lighting make this an ideal space for classes, meetings, and professional services that do not require a full time location. The space is rentable in 5 hour blocks for $40. Computer, LCD projector, folding chairs, tables, and even a massage table are available for use at no additional charge. For more information about Suite 101, call Steve at (505) 310-3828.

We are talking with two different companies about opening a family restaurant and local bar. We think the right restaurant is very important for La Tienda and the community so we are taking our time with this decision. We are still accepting proposals and will entertain all good ideas before we commit the space to anyone.

Thanks for all your support and your patience. Visit our website often for community events, calendar, and more. We are looking forward to getting to know you at the grand opening celebration.

Steve
